The Grisha class antisubmarine ship is designed to to find and destroy high-speed enemy submarines and warships escort convoys in the near sea zone. The first series of Grishas was built from 1968-74, but successive improvements to the design led to four discrete versions, three for the navy and one sub-class for the KGB coastal patrols. Classified by the Russians as small anti-submarine ships, the Grishas pack a heavy anti-submarine armament into a relatively small hull. Combined with a respectable anti-aircraft armament, this makes the Grishas much more effective than the profusion of older escort vessels that were retired in the late 1980s.

Large ASW corvette MPK-104 laid down 12 June 1979 at the Shipyard named after A.M. Gorky, Zelenodolsk (yard No.721) by standart Project 1124, launched 23 March 1980, commissioned 30 October 1980.

In 1980 at the Zaliv Shipyard, Kerch, teh ship was modernized by Project 1124K: SAM system 9K33 Osa-M, stern AK-725, radar MR-320 Topaz-2V were removed, and added 1x3 SAM system Kinzhal VLS (24 missiles 9M330 or 9M330-2) with K-12-1 fire control system.

MPK-104 was decommissioned and excluded from the lists of the Black Sea Fleet on 16 March 1998 and scrapped.
